This family photo outfit ideas post is brought to you in partnership with vineyard vines and ShopStyle. I love collaborating with brands that I love and trust. Opinions and post ideas are my own.
Happy weekend, friends! I hope you’ve had a fabulous week! All is well here and we are still (a month in) trying to get back into the swing of school! Homework started last week, so naturally, neither Teddy or Reagan are thrilled on that subject! Ha!
I am super excited to partner with vineyard vines to bring you today’s post! Every fall this is a much requested post topic and I’m super excited to dive into it today. One of my favorite things to do is to share some family photo outfit ideas to help people plan their family picture sessions. Today, I am bringing you three different look options and also sharing the look that we ended up choosing for our own family pictures. I wanted to give you a few options to choose from! vineyard vines was a great brand to partner with on this topic because I can get head to toe looks for the whole family that coordinate!
Lots of these family photo outfit ideas include items that everyone in the family can wear again and again. All items are also super versatile and while I’m showing them being worn a certain way, most items can be worn in lots of different ways. When planning a photo session, I typically try to figure out the location, then plan a color scheme and then go from there! I will usually pick one hero piece that becomes the piece that I plan and focus everyone in the family’s look around. I think this is key with outfit planning. You don’t want too many colors going on and you want everyone to flow in a good way, but not be matchy matchy! The hero piece can be for any member of the family! In this case, I loved this top for Reagan, so that was my starting point! I also loved this scarf for me and both of those items were the focal point of our family look!
For me, I chose a great pair of basic pants because I knew I’d wear them again and again. They come in lots of colors, so really the possibilities are endless with them. I loved this wool sweater and again, knew I’d wear it ton through the fall and winter! It’s a super versatile piece! I added this fun camo print scarf and these earrings and it really helped to pull my look together and it also brought the green into our outfit color scheme! With Mr. Fancy, we did a great basic button down shirt that he can wear all fall and winter and added a great lightweight pullover on top! With Teddy, I wanted to keep him comfortable! This is key with kids and photoshoots. If they aren’t happy, you’re going to struggle to get great pictures. Teddy prefers shorts (even with it’s 30 degrees. Ha!), so that’s what we went with! I added a fun long sleeve polo and a vest that I know he’ll wear again and again! As I said before, Reagan’s top was my muse so to speak! #givemeallthegingham I paired her cute top with these adorable jeggings and of course a cute headband, because she is all about the accessories! I truly love how this look came together and it was really fun to coordinate the whole family using vineyard vines. Using one brand to coordinate is so helpful because typically you can find lots of color options that coordinate and work well together! Take a peek at what to wear for a fall family photo session!

A few more tips for photos with kids:
Be sure to bring drinks for the kids, especially if it’s hot outside. My kids always need a quick water break.
Lollipops are great to have on hand if someone starts to have a meltdown.
Schedule your session at your kids ideal time of the day. Even if lighting isn’t perfect, over the years, I’ve found that scheduling pictures works best when everyone’s happy! I like to do it in the early evening or mid morning if possible.
Don’t schedule a session during a normal meal time. It’s tough to get kids to cooperate with happy smiles when they are hungry!
Have fun! We laugh a lot during our shoots. Teddy screamed “snake!!” at one point and it totally freaked me out, but it also gave us a good laugh!
Most importantly, work with an awesome photographer who is good with kids. I truly believe the photographer and your kids need to have a connection to get great photos and just to have the kids cooperate in general!
Are you ready for your fall family photo session? I truly hope this post helps give you some inspiration on how to dress your family for your fall pictures! I hope you have a fabulous weekend! XO!

ASHLEY!!!! These pictures are precious and the clothes are DARLING!!!
I love the navy blue and cream colors. You all look great!
Random question, but what do you ask the hairdresser for, for Teddy’s haircut? Like how do you describe how to cut it, the length, etc. I want to get my son’s hair cut that way! Thank you!!
Beautiful ! Fabulous tips, thank you for sharing !
How do you tie your scarf so perfectly??? Love these outfits!
Can you link your booties? Super cute family pics!
Your family is the sweetest! 🙂
