Are there certain words that your children say that make you happy for them but sad for you? There are a few that I have been thinking about a lot lately. Reagan is in a huge “I do it myself” stage. I can’t decide if this is because she’s the second child or because she is 2 going on 5 or if it’s just her independent personality (no idea where she gets that from! ha!) Whatever the case, it makes me a tad sad to hear those words. They have become pretty regular words in her vocab over the past few weeks. Whether it be getting into her car seat, attempting to buckle her car seat belt, going up/down stairs, getting into a chair, getting her shoes or clothes on, etc, her response to us is “I do it myself.” If you don’t let her at least try, you can bet that a tantrum of some form will ensue…I mean, she’s 2. Those are a given these days. 🙂
Ironically, it reminds me of myself a bit with all my worrying. I have mentioned a few times that we have a lot going on right now. It has put my worrying into overdrive. When I worry, it seems like I am saying to Jesus, “I do it myself.” When in all reality, I do not even remotely have the capacity to do anything myself without HIS help. Philippians verse, 4:13 comes to mind, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” Yes, I can do all things, but only through Christ. As I have mentioned numerous times, my favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I swear it pertains to so much of my life. Don’t you feel the same way? I can still remember memorizing this verse back when I was younger and I still find myself repeating it daily. Then there is this, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” ~Isaiah 41:10. I am not sure when I ever decided that I would attempt “do it myself” so to speak. But, the more I worry, the more I realize that it’s just like trying to “do it myself.” I have realized how much Reagan and I both want to assert our independence. Her independence is a natural progression of life, even though it is hard for a parent to swallow (I’m working on this). Me, on the other hand…by worrying and not handing over my stress and worries, to God, I am asserting independence in a bad way as it shows a weakness in my faith in Him and His plan for me. While it’s a constant struggle for me, the amazing news is that God is always with me. He is always looking out for and even has a specific plan for little old me. Now I just need to sit back and stop trying to “do it myself” and let Him do it for me.
